In July 2019, I faced on of the biggest challenges of my life - a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis.
This life-altering experience not only tested my physical, emotional and spiritual strength but also opened my eyes to the importance of prioritizing and taking control of my health.
The Breast Cancer Journey - A Wake-Up Call
After discovering a lump in my right breast, the investigations began. Not long after my biopsy I received the call from my doctor with the news. I had already mentally braced myself for the call and although I was shocked I was not afraid. I knew what I had to do. I had to fight. Then began the process of meeting with my surgeon to discuss the treatment plan. Treatment entailed 8 rounds of chemotherapy bi-weekly, a double mastectomy with right axilla lymph node removal and 30 radiation treatments. By the time I completed chemotherapy the tumour had shrunk significantly. Surgery followed and once I was sufficiently healed I began radiation treatment. Daily trips to the cancer centre for 5 weeks to complete 30 radiation treatments. This was followed by 1 year of Herceptin infusions at the cancer centre. Then annual follow ups with my medical oncologist.
Writing this I have just had my final follow up with my medical oncologist at the cancer centre and I am officially done - 5 years later! I can't even describe how amazing this feels!
Through my personal journey, I discovered so many things that would put me on the path to wellness and I want to share them with the hope that it will inspire others to take control of their health.
Here's what I learned and in future blog posts I will do a deeper dive into these:
Finding an herbalist and naturopathic doctor was key to managing all of the side effects of cancer treatment and in setting a solid foundation for wellness post treatment
There is so much power in prayer. I was so incredibly fortunate to have a team of prayer warriors and my experience strengthened my relationship with God.
Healthy eating is so important and our choices make a big difference. There are so many resources available to guide you.
It's not hard to give up old (sometimes unhealthy) habits.
Not all water is equal and hydrogen rich electrolyzed reduced water is the best for our health.
Investing in your health is worth it.
Physical activity is so important! I found a personal trainer and I do high intensity workouts twice a week and cardio three times a week. I've set some big goals!
Stress reduction is important. It's important to find things you enjoy to destress.
Information is out there and if you want to reduce your risks - you can!
For me personally it took a life changing event for me to go to battle, to heal, and to come out even stronger and healthier.
